The total number of refugees who have been already registered in UNHCR’s proGres database and hold ration cards reaches 15,169 individuals. Ration card numbers are useful for referral between partners and for distribution events.

UNHCR Representative, Moses Okello undertook a joint mission with ARRA Deputy Director, Ayalew Awoke to familiarize themselves with the level of the emergency response in Assosa. Similarly they also addressed the issue relating to the provision of additional land on which to accommodate refugees. Accompanied by the President of Benishagul-Gumuz Regional State, their mission has yielded an agreement by authorities to avail more land to increase the size of Tongo camp. The additional land is expected to accommodate some 7,000 refugees which could bring the total capacity of Tongo to approximately 12,000 refugees.

Approximately 1,200 Sudanese refugees crossed into Geissan (E) and Gamet in the last three days. According to UNHCR government counterpart and implementing partner, ARRA, persistent rains and poor roads have made access to the new arrivals extremely difficult. Their food security is therefore of concern to humanitarian workers.

A high level group of diplomats and parliamentarians visited over 7,000 Sudanese refugees in Tongo Refugee Camp on Tuesday 15 November. Ethiopia’s newest refugee settlement, Tongo opened on 05 October with 400 refugees. A little over a month later the camp population has increased significantly.
