Lebanon - The first centralized distribution in Akkar started in June through various local sites spread throughout the North, including Rama’s mukhtar Ali Beddawi’s residence, the Mahad El Kabess community centre in Halba, Markaz el Saade centre in Kawashra and Machata Hammoud primary school. A total of 7,734 individuals received food, hygiene and baby kits. 29/06/2012
The number of displaced Syrians currently registered with UNHCR and the High Relief Commission (HRC) in North Lebanon is 7,058 persons. Most live with host families in the Wadi Khaled area. A few hundred reside in collective shelters. All are being assisted by the HRC, UNCHR and partners. 05/03/2012
There are also concentrations of displaced Syrians residing in other parts of Lebanon. UNHCR’s latest estimates with partners indicate that there are between 3,000-4,500 persons in need in the eastern Lebanon and several hundred in Beirut and areas further south. They are assisted by local NGOs, municipalities, and other partners. UNHCR is contributing to and expanding its efforts to meet humanitarian needs of these communities. 05/03/2012
On March 4 several hundred persons were reported arriving in the al Qua border area. UNHCR and partners are verifying the situation and undertaking needs assessments. Meanwhile, essential food and non-food items are being sent to the area to provide support. 05/03/2012
On March 2, more Syrians crossed with some 50 families arriving in Aarsal, and 170 families in Fakha village. According to the mayor of Aarsal, there are an additional 75 families in Mashariia Al Qaa, although some NGOs place the number at twice that amount. The most reliable estimates place the total number in the Bekaa to be around 4000 persons/ UNHCR is working to verify the current numbers. 12/03/2012
The High Relief Commission received approval on additional funding to continue assistance to displaced Syrians in north Lebanon averting the feared March 23 shutdown. 23/03/2012
UNHCR and partners are currently assessing and locating additional primary health care centers in north Lebanon to increase the health care coverage of Syrians dispersed around the area. 08/04/2012
Home visits have helped UNHCR and partners register close to 400 children in the Bekaa for remedial classes scheduled to begin next week. 27/04/2012
UNHCR and partners continue to address growing needs, such as health and hygiene promotion, in the Bekaa in regards to mapping water sources. Water and Sanitation (WASH) experts are looking at water treatment options. 27/04/2012
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoHE) in Lebanon has appointed focal points within the Ministry to support the work of UNHCR and partners. This work will include liaising between UNHCR and public schools in the area to facilitate the implementation of educational activities. 21/05/2012
