To avoid tensions with refugees, Lebanese hosts need support
IRIN News, 29/01/2013
Donors channelling funds towards Syrian refugees in Lebanon must also assist their poor Lebanese hosts to diffuse rising tensions, aid workers and a government official said ahead of an international pledging conference for humanitarian aid to Syria and its neighbours.
“We have seen a growing sense of resentment among the Lebanese host communities that see assistance going to refugees and not to them,” Robert Watkins, humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, told IRIN. “It is causing some tensions.”

UN, EU urge more Syria aid as conflict enters 'new phase'
Agence France Presse, 20/12/2012
BEIRUT — EU and UN aid chiefs called in Beirut on Saturday for urgent funds to help internally displaced and refugee Syrians, in a new phase of a "brutal conflict" that has killed tens of thousands and affected hundreds of thousands more.
In Damascus, meanwhile, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem called on the United Nations to push for an end to Western sanctions, which he said were causing suffering among the Syria people.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told reporters in Beirut that "this is not a conflict like many others. This indeed became a brutal conflict in the context of dramatic humanitarian tragedy."
He called on the world to step up financial support for countries hosting Syrian refugees, saying they require "massive support."
The UNHCR says the number of refugees in neighbouring Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq has now reached more than 500,000,... |

LBC Television Report on Shelter Boxes
LBC, 12/10/2012
School capacity in central Bekaa is over-stretched with many Syrian refugee parents wanting to enrol their kids in school. At this public school (Rawda), the maximum student capacity is normally 300, but the school stopped registering students at 382 this year. The school principal and teachers' offices had to be turned into classrooms.
One refugee interviewed says: I have 4 children that I attempted to register in school but there was no space. We urge the government to help us, otherwise our children will not be able to enrol in schools this year.
With the help of MoSA, UNHCR built shelter boxes outside the school to replace school principal and teachers' offices.

Germany donates 500,000 euros for Healthcare of Syrians in Lebanon
, 05/09/2012
On August 23, UNHCR welcomed a 500,000 euro donation by the German government to help meet the health needs of displaced Syrians in Lebanon. This brings the total contribution of the Government of Germany to UNHCR’s efforts for Syrian refugees in Lebanon to one million euros.
The donation will help cover crucial gaps in the treatment of critical health conditions and allow more Syrian refugees to access UNHCR’s network of referral hospitals in Lebanon. The donation will also help cover hospitalization costs including baby deliveries such as C-section for Syrian mothers.
“This is a most welcome and much needed contribution as medical care is essential yet costly, said Ninette Kelley, UNHCR Representative. ‘Now many Syrian refugees will have access to treatment, including life-saving care that would have previously been very difficult if not impossible to secure’.

UNHCR operations in Lebanon are returning to normal with some improvements in the security situation over recent days. Distribution in the north was disrupted but with the reopening of the northern highway over the weekend our trucks can now deliver relief items to our hubs in Qobbayat.
In the Bekaa valley, UNHCR distribution, registration and field visits have resumed. With the new school term about to start, UNHCR is urgently trying to relocate refugee families staying in schools who are coming under increasing pressure to leave ahead of the new school term. Last week, UNHCR submitted a list of 11 abandoned schools in the East to education authorities seeking permission to relocate refugees there and we hope to receive government permission soon.
In the North, UNHCR has found an alternati... |
