Over 100,000 People in Ayeyawady Get Citizenship Verification Cards in Four Months

Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe attended a ceremony to issue the national citizenship verification cards to local people in Pathein yesterday and disclosed the government’s plan to issue smart cards to the people in the future.

Speaking at the ceremony, Union Minister U Thein Swe said the ministry is making different approaches to the case and reviewing the various aspects of issuing the smart cards to the people as the task is huge.

Internal migrant people are facing challenges from the social, economic and educational disparities as they do not have household certificates, said the Union Minister, adding that to overcome those challenges, the ministry has relaxed rules for issuing the national citizenship cards.

“Today, the internal migrant people can apply the national citizenship verification cards at local offices where they are living currently and they don’t need to go back to their original places to get the cards,” said Union Minister U Thein Swe. Under the new project namely Thitsar Project started on May 1, 2016, officials of the ministry has issued the cards to people by carrying out field trips to wards and villagers.

Working on the Project, the ministry has issued national citizenship verification cards to 100,903 people from 15 August to 11 December, 2018, in Ayeyawady Region including 20,382 people aged 18 and above, 8,162 who changed the old with new ones, 18,334 who lost their cards.
