Methodology description: |
The sample design follows stratified two-stage cluster sample design. The population of Jordan is first grouped into five strata: refugees living in Za’atari, refugees living in Azraq, non-camp population living near Za’atari, Azraq, and in Amman. For the first stage sampling, enumeration areas are selected using simple random sampling from the list of all enumeration areas stratified by high and low refugee prevalence. Outside of camps, the sampling frame for enumeration areas is the census block defined by Department of Statistics for the 2004 census. In the camps, enumeration areas were defined and demarcated for the purpose of this study consisting of approximately 200 dwellings each in Za’atari and 100 dwellings in Azraq. The total number of EAs is 180 with the following distribution of EAs across camp and non-camp settings:
Za’atari: 40
Azraq: 20
Districts surrounding Za’atari: 40
Districts surrounding Azraq: 40
Amman: 40
The second stage sampling consists of the selection of 12 dwellings from each block for the household questionnaire. Second-stage sampling will follow the listing exercise that is currently underway in Za’atari camp and will soon start in Azraq. All households are interviewed during the listing phase to collect basic information, including the refugee status, of the household. In non-camp EAs, 6 refugee and 6 non-refugee households will be selected in each block from the list of all households for the full survey. The total sample size is 2160.
Data will be collected using paper and pencil. |

The surveys that have been conducted among refugee population have largely focused on specific issues regarding humanitarian aid, but oftentimes only cover part of the refugee population and omit the host communities. This multi-country survey work proposes to fill these gaps by undertaking a specialized survey that is representative of both the Syrian refugee and native populations in three of the four most important host communities. The information that is collected will provide a snapshot of the major issues and challenges facing the refugees and local communities. The objectives of the survey are:
1. To assess the socio-economic and living conditions of a representative sample of the Syrian refugee and host community population in Lebanon, the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and high prevalence areas in Jordan.
2. To understand the implications in terms of social and economic conditions on the host communities.
3. To identify strategies to support Syrian refugees and host communities in the immediate and longer term.
