Over 131,000 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Sudan in 2016. This brings the cumulative total to 297,168 since the start of the emergency in December 2013.

UNHCR Sudan and response partners are planning for an additional influx of 60,000 South Sudanese refugees into Sudan throughout 2017.

Over 760,000 South Sudanese refugees have fled South Sudan in 2016. The South Sudan refugee crisis is now the largest refugee situation on the continent.

Bio-metric registration of refugees at the Kario site in East Darfur began in mid-December and is expected to be complete by end of February 2017.

Development of the new Al Nimir refugee site in East Darfur is underway. The site is planned for 10,000 South Sudanese refugees.

On 1 September, an MoU was signed between UNHCR and Sudan’s Commissioner of Refugees (COR) to guide the protection and assistance of South Sudanese refugees.

Recent fighting has led to more than 37,000 South Sudanese refugees fleeing to Uganda, more than arrived in the first 6 months of 2016.

New arrivals in Uganda report that armed militias are burning down homes, murdering civilians and forcibly recruiting young men and boys in to their ranks.

A new settlement area is to be opened in Yumbe district, and could potentially host up to 100,000 South Sudanese refugees.

More than 18,000 South Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda since fighting began in Juba on 7th July.
