On the January 4, 2017, UNHCR Representative to the Arab Republic of Egypt and to the League of Arab States, Mr. Karim Atassi met with the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, H.E. Mr. Aboul Gheit, to discuss cooperation in regards to the current regional refugee situation. During the meeting, the Secretary General stressed the need to strengthen the existing cooperation between both institutions and highlighted the importance of capacity building of the League of Arab States on issues related to refugees as well as the importance of the adoption of Arab Convention on regulating the refugee situation; that is being discussed among the member states. H.E Mr. Aboul Gheit acknowledged UNHCR’s efforts in favor of refugees worldwide and in particular in the Arab region.

UNHCR Community Support Programmes (CSPs) on December 29, 2016, held reflective and informative training sessions on the experience of engaging with host and refugee communities in Egypt. The sessions reiterated the objectives of the projects, reviewed their processes, and explored new possibilities.

Mr. Amin Awad, MENA Bureau Director visited Egypt early December. During his visit, he met with government officials, toured the Zamalek registration centre and visited UNHCR projects in Alexandria.

On 12 November UNHCR Regional Representative Elizabeth Tan and Dinesh Shrestha, UNHCR Head of Field Office in Alexandria, met with Major General Tarek Mahdy, Governor of Alexandria, to further strengthen the cooperation between UNHCR Egypt and the Egyptian Authorities on matters relating to refugees.

The Verification process of the Syrian population has been on going with full speed in order to verify their presence in the country.

The opening of “Hoosh Yegam’ana – Child and Community Friendly Spaces” in New Damietta Central Park was celebrated by UNHCR,Terre Des Homme and O’ecumene Studio

On 14 Jan 2015 UNHCR RR Ms.Tan met with the Governor of Marsa Matrouh to express UNHCR’s appreciation for Governments' support in hosting refugees in Salloum.

The Egyptian Governement, the UN, and their partners are appealing for almost US $380 million to cover both the refugee and resilience components in 2015.

On 17 February, the Egypt chapter of the Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP) was launched jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by Ambassador Abdelrahman Salah, Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs, and the United Nations, represented by Ms. Anita Nirody, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt.

On 18 March Elizabeth Tan, UNHCR Representative and Head of Alexandria Field Office Dinesh Shrestha visited the Governor of Damietta to express their gratitude for Damietta’s hospitality to Syrian refugees and to strengthen UNHCR’s relationship with the governorate and its different directorates.
