The Government of Uganda and UNHCR organised a Solidarity Summit in Kampala to rally international support for the refugee situation in Uganda.

A new settlement, named Omugo, opens in northern Uganda, with the capacity to hold 40,000 refugees fleeing from South Sudan

As of 31 August 2017, the number of new arrivals was 4,887 since January 2017. The arrival rate over the year is an average of 20 individuals per day so far. Of the 4,887 new arrivals, 52% have settled in Reception Centers and the rest of 48% have settled in urban areas ( Kigali, Huye).

To accommodate the current influx of South Sudanese refugees at Meri site (150/day), construction of 3 hangars or 150 individual shelters per week is necessary.

Following the death of 38 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers in Kamanyola, South Kivu, in a confrontation with armed forces, UNHCR is providing emergency aid and called for investigation.

In the new site of Mulongwe works are ongoing with two operational partners (MEDEOR and CARITAS) working with their own funds. However, works have slowed down due to the worsening security situation in Fizi territory.

Cholera epidemics was declared in the territories of Fizi and Uvira. No cases have been reported so far in refugees hosting structures. Preventive measures were put in place.

Starting from 14/12/12 Unity and Upper Nile weekly meetings will be merged into one Weekly Refugee Coordination Meeting, to be held at UNHCR Juba.

Verification exercise in Yida ended today.The active camp population is 54.992, including new arrivals. A detailed profile report of the population will follow.

UNHCR, WHO and the GoSS confirmed a surge of Hepatitis E in Upper Nile Refugee Camps: 3,319 cases and 69 deaths since July 2012.
