The high percentage of children among the South Sudanese refugee population makes this a children’s refugee and education crisis. Over 50% of South Sudanese refugees in the region do not have access to basic primary or secondary education and less than 1% have access to tertiary education.

Education is very basic, with insufficient learning materials and overcrowded classrooms in all countries of asylum. In Tanzania, over 17,600 Burundi refugee students are attending classes under trees.

In Sudan, about 80,000 refugees are still without access to latrines across all 10 camps. In some cases over 70 people have to use a single communal latrine.

54 per cent of the Burundian Refugee population are children. In response to this crisis, and in light of the serious impact on children, UNHCR and child protection partners have come together to jointly agree on a Regional Plan of Action for the Protection of Refugee Children for the period January to December 2018. 52% of the total 232,716 Burundian refugees will remain in emergency shelters and over 17,600 refugee students will continue to attend classes under trees due to under-funding of the Burundian Refugee Situation.

High rates of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rates are reported in asylum countries, compounding pre-existing protection challenges faced by the South Sudanese refugees prior to their flight in particular for women, children and youth.

Food ration cuts have left refugees with insufficient to feed families. Shelters are in desperate conditions in places, health centres are struggling to cope with the number of patients, classrooms are overcrowded, and capacity to help unaccompanied children and survivors of sexual violence is very limited.

UNHCR establish call center to ease communication with refugees to enable them to report urgent protection and assistance-related problems, receive guidance on queries that they raise, lodge complaints about sensitive incidents or obtain general information and advice.

UNHCR and its humanitarian partners are developing a joint action plan to help prevent suicides by detecting those at risk and building referral systems. It is acknowledged that physical protection is not enough and there is a need to help create livelihoods. The 'Operation Hope' Campaign aims to cut rise in suicides sparked by South Sudan war. Experts believe the negative effect of South Sudan’s conflict on civilians’ mental health has been staggering.

Some 57,000 refugees living in informal settlements in Khartoum are going without any assistance.
