Since 2014, UNHCR, in partnership with Safe from the Start, an anti-SGBV initiative supported by the US Government, has developed 15 new projects to reduce the risk of SGBV through access to cooking energy and the creation of livelihood opportunities for refugee women.

One of our anti-SGBV Initiatives is the MADE51. This artisan initiative allows refugee artisans, many of them women at risk of SGBV, to receive expert product development support and access to international marketing channels and sustainable livelihoods.

UNHCR deployed an emergency team in Wau to look into the protection needs of vulnerable IDPs following the June 24 violence, which displaced tens of thousands.

In Doro camp, UNHCR partner Danish Refugee Council distributed plastic sheets and mosquito nets to more than 8,600 refugee families.

The Juba – Nimule road, the main road to Uganda, reportedly continues to remain obstructed by check points and road blocks.

Border restrictions on South Sudan side have been eased slightly. Vehicles continue to be prevented from crossing but those on foot are now being granted access

More than 18,000 South Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda since fighting began in Juba on 7th July.

On 16 June, the Day of the African Child was commemorated in all South Sudanese refugee camps in Gambella region. Children’s activities to mark the day included: songs, cultural show, football and volleyball matches.

Recent fighting has led to more than 37,000 South Sudanese refugees fleeing to Uganda, more than arrived in the first 6 months of 2016.

A new settlement area is to be opened in Yumbe district, and could potentially host up to 100,000 South Sudanese refugees.
