Methodology description: |
The Youth Assessment will provide purely qualitative information regarding the experiences of Syrian youth in Zaatari, Azraq, and EJC camps, and their engagement with Youth Targeted Programming (YTP) offered by different humanitarian actors. The rationale for a wholly qualitative assessment is based on the nature of the information sought and the key indicators to be measured: the Youth Assessment is designed to obtain a detailed understanding of experiences and perceptions of Syrian youth, as well as to identify community-sourced recommendations for improving YTP currently being offered in these camps. As such, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) will ask open ended questions in order to capture the perceptions and nuanced experiences of participants. Prior to this, participants will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire to explore the prevalence of participation in YTP, and collect specific information needed to contextualize the data from FGDs. These qualitative insights on youth perspectives, experiences and outcomes of programmes will be complemented by secondary literature analysis of programme provision, to be conducted prior to the assessment start. |

Syrian refugee camps in Jordan host a relatively high youth population. As such, after four years of camp presences, there has been a variety of targeted programming provided to this demographic. Now entering the sixth year of this protracted crisis, the need for a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability of youth programming that encompasses both youth experiences, as well as programmatic impact, has been identified. Specifically, there is a lack of information regarding the extent to which youth benefit from these programmes, and are able to utilize skills learnt and engage in income-earning opportunities. This information gap corresponds with an increasing focus on Syrian youth issues within the humanitarian response, such as in Protection and Education sectors, as well as the need to focus on programme quality, relevance and sustainability.
