Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole yesterday confirmed that 47 people have so far been killed by Lassa fever epidemic in the country. Adewole told the joint House Committee on Health during the 2016 budget defence at the National Assembly that he had instructed airport authorities to screen passengers coming into the country for Lassa fever and the Zika virus. This is just as the House Committee chairman on Health Services, Chike Okafor, told the health ministry to drop any programme or project that would not promote the good health of Nigerians. Okafor said in the midst of meagre resources, there is the need to channel available resources to critical health issues so as to improve the health of the citizenry. He told the health minister to ensure that his actions and policies are geared towards the promotion of a state of physical, mental, emotional and social well being of Nigerians. On whether the amount voted for the health sector in the 2016 budget is adequate, he said: “When we look at the proposal and the estimate they have made, if we think it is not going to serve adequately the needs of Nigerians, we will do the needful.” Chairman, House Committee on Health Institutions, Mohammad Jega, also said that they have already interacted with components of the ministry and institutions and would know where the need is and what would help Nigerians to achieve health for all.
