Mauritania is experiencing a significant influx of Malian refugees, with approximately 91,000 new arrivals between January and July 2024, bringing the total number of refugees and asylum seekers in the country to over 262,000. The Hodh Chargui region in southeastern Mauritania is hosting more than 242,000 Malian refugees, with around 110,000 residing in Mbera Camp and 132,000 spread across 70 hosting villages. In June 2024, UNHCR and 24 partners launched a Refugee Response Plan for these refugees. In the coastal cities of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, there has been a 78% increase in disembarkations and interceptions, with 3,500 people arriving between January and August 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. UNHCR continues to deliver critical support to vulnerable refugees and strengthen resilience initiatives throughout Mauritania.
