The United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR), Nigeria, says it will train its staff and partners on protection of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Hanson Tamfu, External Relations Officer, UNHCR, the commission said that the training was within the context of UNHCR Level II for Nigeria’s situation.

It stated that the four-day training — from April 20 to April 24 –was designed to build the protection capacity of key stakeholders in Nigeria and UNHCR staff on IDPs related issues.

It noted that the training would further arm stakeholders on the how to handle the IDPs arising from the activities of insurgents and communal clashes across Nigeria.

It added the relevant skills and knowledge acquired would equip participants for greater impact and more effective field work.

“Participants would be trained on protection coordination and cluster approach, legal frameworks on IDPs.

“Others are protection analysis tools and guidelines on design of protection response and information on the humanitarian programme cycle.

“Prior to the commencement of the training, participants would have completed an e-learning course which would further build their knowledge on international coordination system for large scale emergencies.

“The e-learning course would also encompass notes on humanitarian funding and planning and other areas of importance to humanitarian response to IDPs,’’ the statement said.

According to the statement, the training will be facilitated by the staff from the UNHCR Global Learning Centre from Budapest, Hungary.

It added that it would be in collaboration with both the UNHCR branch office, Abuja and the Bauchi sub-office.

It said the training would be held from April 20 to April 21 in Kubwa, Abuja and in Bauchi between April 23 and April 24.(NAN)
