Red Cross Society of Nigeria in collaboration with UN High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) distributed relief materials to 3,000 households of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Gombe State.

Presenting the materials on Tuesday, the Head of the UNHCR Sub-Office Bauchi in charge of North East, Mr Cesar Tshilombo, said the materials were meant to assist the IDPs in the state.

He said the gesture was to bring succour to the IDPs and not to pay them back of what they had lost.He added that “today, with the assistance of Red Cross, we start the distribution of relief materials to 3,000 households in Gombe State.

“This operation is not only for Gombe State as it will be extended to Bauchi State.

“By next week, we will be in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno to do the same so as to alleviate the suffering of displace persons.’’

Tshilombo said the initiative targeted 3,000 households in each state, especially the venerable. According to him, the plan is to reach out to 65,000 individuals by the end of April.

He then thanked the Red Cross Society for the effort to render assistance to the IDPs and advised the IDPs to understand that they were still Nigerians as their situation would soon be a thing of the past.

In his remark, Abubakar Yakubu, the Gombe State Secretary of Red Cross advised beneficiaries of the relief items to make judicious use of them and urged those who did not benefit to exercise patience as they would be considered first in the next distribution.

He called on them to continue to live in peace with their host communities. According to him, the Red Cross will on Wednesday continue the distribution of same items to IDPs who settled in Funakaye and Nafada local government areas of the state.

Kachi Adamu-Damboa, the leader of the IPDs in Bogo, thanked the group for the gesture and the provision of humanitarian service to the people. He urged other Non Governmental Organisations to provide the IDPs with other material that would be useful to them before they go back to their respective towns and villages.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items distributed include blankets, kerosene stove, solar lanterns, mosquito nets, bathroom slippers, detergent and vaseline.

The IDPS were those who fled Borno and Yobe states and now taking shelter at Bogo, Hammadu-Kafi, Wuro-Shiye, Dundadu and Sabon Kaura, all in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
