The Karen National Union (KNU) held a peace meeting in the eastern border town of Myawady, Kayin State on October 26.
Ashin Sandrawara, presiding monk of Thumadayamatawya Monastery in Hpa-an, chaired the meeting and gave a speech opposing various forms of violence that are hampering the peace process.
"We have started seeing almost full trust for our future passage. It is sure enough for genuine peace to be restored through the ceasefire process," said Phado Marn Nyein Maung, central committee member of the KNU.
The mass meeting was attended by Karen religious organisations, armed groups, political parties and community-based organisations from both sides of the border inside and outside.
The meeting highlighted equality and self-administration based on a federal system to strengthen national unity and sustainable peace.
They also pointed out environmental and economic challenges, as well as questions of social welfare, education, health and culture which need to be guaranteed by the constitution.
Questions regarding the Karen armed forces and the unity of Karen political parties were also be on the agenda.
