Talks are underway to amend the Constitution

The meeting to amend the 2008 Constitution is expected to kick off in May, says Upper House MP Dr. Aye Maung on April 9.

Dr Aye Maung is also the member of Constitution Amendment Committee formed on February 3.

“At present, the committee has no ongoing work assigned under the previous parliamentary session. There are no activities. We have leant that the next legislative session will commence in the third week of May. And in May’s first week, we have planned to hold the meeting on constitution amendments. We expect our talks to proceed continuously, including weekends,” said Dr. Aye Maung.

Union Assembly Speaker Thura Shwe Mann said that the pertinent charter provisions slated for change must be amended in accordance with the legislative power. The amendments should complete six months ahead of the 2015 general election.

Aye Mauk, Secretary of the Parliament in charge of charter change, told to the reporters at the Parliament on February 19 that the Section 436 must be amended even though it might be difficult to bring about change.

The committee is responsible for charter change, for reviewing charter provisions and for drafting the proposed amendments.

It comprises 31 representatives, including 14 from Union Solidarity and Development Party, seven from the military, two from National League for Democracy and one each from National Unity Party, Shan Nationalities Democratic Party, Chin Progressive Party, Phalon-Sawar Democracy Force, PaO National League. Arkan Nationalities Development Party and All Mon State Democracy Party.
