Mine risk reduction official Nyi Nyi Naing from Loikaw office said that a mine risk awareness training program will be conducted in rural villages in Kayah (Karenni) State in the form of role play.

The activities are being carried out in order to prevent landmine risk. Grace Group (Garuna) from Loikaw conducted 4 days of training at the YLFC (Youth Life Formation Center) office from June 12-15. Those who completed the training will participate in the next step of the training program.

Nyi Nyi Naing said,“After we provide them with the training we will go into the villages. There, as a team we will go from place to place and conduct the role play program. We will include mine risk related trainings and news in our role play.”

The areas with the highest level of landmine contamination in Kayah State are Mawchi, Shadaw and along Thai-Myanmar border area and the Lawpita region, where landmines have been planted under the electricity poles.

Nyi Nyi Hla from Dawna village said, “We have heard before that there are some landmines within the village areas. We have also heard that there are still some land mines within three miles away from the village. We hope that we will be able to share the knowledge on landmines we have gained with others.”

Landmine awareness training will also be conducted in Demoso and Hpruso.

A statement regarding the issue of landmine clearance was released during the second round of union level peace negotiations between the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and the government on 19 June 2013. The two parties have agreed to negotiate on landmine clearance. Currently international and community organizations are only allowed to provide landmine awareness trainings.
