The Voter Education and Monitoring Group, comprising 25 civil society organisations, will in October launch a nationwide campaign to compile the list of eligible voters for the 2015 general election.
The list compilation is expected to complete by the middle of next year. In a pilot project with the completion date in August, the checks on eligible voters will take place in constituencies at Ahlon Township, Yangon Region; Tiddim, Chin State and Myitkyina, Kachin State.
The civil society organisations will educate voters on how to check the notice boards for voter names and computerised personal details at polling stations. They will also help in the distribution of poll-related posters and pamphlets to voters if deemed necessary.
Furthermore, they plan to use native languages of national races to disseminate balloting information in Kachin and Chin states.
“Our group is presently carrying out the knowledge dissemination on voting in Ahlon Township. The main focus is to avoid vote rigging and to make sure that voters can cast their votes. Some people are still afraid of answering our questions. We will observe and monitor the 2014 by-elections,” said the group’s Thet Oo.
The group has been training Yangon residents to observe the voting before choosing 20 volunteers to monitor the balloting. It will conduct poll-related courses for constituencies in Chin State and Mandalay Region where by-elections would be held later this year.
