Myanmar held political talks involving the President, Union Parliament Speaker, Commander-in-Chief, democratic icon Aung San Suu Kyi and representatives from political parties at the Presidential House in Nay Pyi Taw today, reports say.
Present at the meeting were President Thein Sein, Aung San Suu Kyi chairperson of National League for Democracy, Union Parliament Speaker Thura Shwe Mann, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Vice Presidents Dr. Sai Mauk Kham and Nyan Tun, Upper House Speaker Khin Aung Myint, Union Election Commission Chairman Tin Aye, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Vice-Chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party Htay Oo, Shan National League for Democracy Chairman Khun Tun Oo representing the United Nationalities Alliance, Shan National Democratic Party Chairman Sai Aik Paung representing the Nationalities Brotherhood Federation, National Democratic Force Chairman Khin Maung Swe representing the Federal Democratic Alliance and Thein Tun from the National Unity Party.
The NLD and its allied parties already issued a joint statement on July 7 saying such a high profile meeting with President Thein Sein, Shwe Mann, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Aung San Suu Kyi could greatly benefit both the present and future of the country.
On November last year also, Suu Kyi sent a letter of request to the president calling for a four-party dialogue so as to facilitate constitutional reforms. The president however remarked that such talks should come after the report compiled by the Union parliament’s Constitutional Amendment Committee officially comes out.
Media were allowed only to take photos of the meeting and the exclusive press conference was arranged by the Ministry of Information.
“The president called for open discussion to seek ways for national political forces to cooperate together regarding three sectors,” Information Minister Ye Htut said at the press conference.
“The president referred to the three sectors. The first sector is to promote the ongoing democratic reforms and political processes and then to ensure that democracy is rooted and a developed Myanmar society emerges. The second is to strengthen national reconsolidation based on the peace progress we have so far achieved. For the third sector, it is the matter of maintaining the present political stability so that we can hold the 2015 general election successfully as an important stage in the democratic transition. These are the three sectors the president prioritized. All the participants discussed them openly”.
Ye Htut also said the participants discussed about holding further meetings to seek better ways.
“The situation is like what the president has said. We could exchange views openly. We can expect further meetings,” said Khin Maung Swe.
“All the participants have almost agreed to amend the constitution in parliament.Another point we discussed is to launch family-based mechanized farming for socio-economic development. The most important thing is peace. All called for signing NCA (National Cease-fire Agreement) as we are in a stage of discussing with illegal organisations after discarding such barriers as (17/1). We can say the meeting results are good.”
