Basic edu teacher promotions, salaries to be upgraded

In order to boost quality learning from the earliest grades, and retain experienced staff, the Ministry of Education’s Department of Basic Education will promote teachers within their schools and upgrade their salaries.
Previously, teachers started out in the lower grades, and as they gained experience were promoted to the middle and then high school levels. The only way to move up the pay scale was to likewise keep moving up with the grades, which left the least experienced teachers responsible for the youngest students.
But now, in a renewed commitment to boosting quality education from the earliest grades, the ministry said if a primary school teacher performs well or accumulates work experience, they will be promoted to primary school “experts”, with levels 1 and 2. The expert level system will be employed at basic, middle and high school levels, according to U Khaing Myal, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education.
“As soon as the teachers get the promotions, their salaries will be upgraded,” said U Khaing Myal.
The Ministry of Education has already submitted requests for elevating teacher salaries to the Ministry of Planning and Finance and the National Government Office.
“When we get a reply from the National Government Office, we will increase teacher salaries,” he said. “It may be implemented this year.”
Currently, a beginning primary school teacher earns about K155,000, while a secondary school teacher is paid a starting rate of K165,000, and a high school teacher initially makes about K175,000.
