Yangon University’s Hlaing campus, also known as Rangoon College RC-2 compound, which was closed in 1996 due to the national student's movement, reopened on Monday.
Over 1000 new undergraduate students for the 2017-2018 academic year are attending classes in the compound.
The compound first opened in 1977 as a regional college.
“In 1988, all universities and colleges nationwide closed because of the student revolution. The compound opened again in 1991. After that, the compound was closed again in 1996 and has been closed until now,” said U Ant Bwe Kyaw, who studied at the RC-2 compound during the 1982-1983 and 1983 -1984 academic years.
Yangon University’s classrooms cannot accommodate all students. The re-opening of the compound is hence convenient as it provides more space, U Thein Win, director general for the Department of Higher Education told The Myanmar Times on Tuesday.
“There will be more classrooms with the RC-2 re-opening,” said U Sai Khine Myo Tun, a lecturer at the International Relations Department.
In 2000, some of the buildings from the RC-2 compound were used as a teachers’ training center by the Yangon University of Education. Since then, the training center had been relocated near the Yangon University of Education and inaugurated on December 1.
“Most of the buildings are still in good shape, so we have to renovate them,” U Thein Win said.
