In 2010, the EU allowed imports of wild-caught fishery products from Myanmar. Eight years later, Myanmar will now be able to export products from farm-raised fish to European Union member countries starting from December 1, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.
Samples were sent to laboratories in Europe and Thailand according to NRMP and the results are sent to the EU’s DG-SANTE office in Brussels from 2015 to 2018. According to Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2018/1583 of October 18, 2018, Myanmar is now allowed to export fishery products to EU, both farmed-raised and wild-caught fish.
To export fishery products, Myanmar needs to follow Good Aquaculture Practice (GAqP) guidelines for food safety, quarantine, and good breeding practices.
There are over 10,000 acres of ponds breeding fish and prawn, which have received GAqP certificate issued by the fishery department.
Moreover, the EU has a goal to help develop the fish farming sector in Myanmar, and has committed to provide €20 million for a fishery products development project, which will be carried out based on expert’s finding from the EU, and suggestions from Myanmar Fishery Federation.
According to the data from the Ministry of Commerce for last three fiscal year, Myanmar exported fishery worth $581 million in 2017 Fiscal Year, $699 million in 2018 Fiscal Year and $298 million for the six-month transitional Fiscal Year which ran from April to September 2018.
