Government and civil society organisations have endorsed a national nutrition action plan aimed at reducing malnutrition among mothers, children and adolescent girls in Myanmar.

The plan was endorsed at a meeting in Yangon on Monday by the ministries of Health and Sports; Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation; Education; and Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement; as well as donor agencies, UN agencies, and the Scaling up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance.

The plan would focus on the health, social welfare, education, and agriculture/livelihoods sectors, governance, and monitoring and evaluation.

The ministerial budgets for the programme allocate K285 billion (US$203 million) for Health and Sports; K204 billion for Education; K197 billion for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation; and K225 billion for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Myanmar has a high rate of maternal and child malnutrition despite strong macroeconomic growth and poverty reduction initiatives over the past decade.

Some 1.4 million children under the age of five are classified as stunted, despite a decline in stunting or chronic under-nutrition from over 40 percent in 1990 to 29.2pc in 2016.

Government data also showed that under-nutrition continues to affect 7pc of preschool children.
