UNHCR condemns the 16 March incident in which 42 people, including refugees, were killed when a boat carrying around 145 passengers - among them women and children - came under fire off Yemen’s west coast, near Al Hudaydah.

Protection staff from UNHCR had a meeting with the District Commissioner and immigration authorities in Ngara District following reports of some ad hoc screening activities conducted by the immigration officers at border posts in the district where some asylum-seekers were reportedly facing challenges in gaining entry into Tanzania. The implications and serious concerns were shared with UNHCR in Dar es Salaam. UNHCR then sent a formal communication to the Tanzanian Ministry of Home Affairs in Dar es Salaam for clarification and to find a solution.

A biometric verification exercise started in Luwani refugee camp on March 14, 2017. The exercise is aimed at ensuring an improvement in the delivery of protection and assistance to Mozambican asylum seekers by updating their data to include occupation, skills, languages, education and specific needs. In consequence, UNHCR and the Government of Malawi will have accurate data on the most vulnerable, and will thus be better placed to target protection and assistance programs for persons with specific needs. As part of the verification exercise, the biometric information of each individuals is fully captured including fingerprint and Iris. Biometric data ensures that the identity of the person is safely stored over time thus guaranteeing protection and assistance to the person entitled thereto, as well as reliable and accurate statistics. All persons of concern verified, will be issued with family documents and new laminated ration cards.

In total, as of 28th Feb. 52,591 Somali refugees returned home since 8th December 2014, when UNHCR started supporting voluntary return of Somali refugees.
