  • National Command Operation Center (NCOC) has warned of the 4th wave of COVID-19 as there is a steady increase in daily cases of COVID-19 positive cases, which was over 1,800 on 12 July as compared to an average less than 1,000 during the first week of July. The positivity rate has also climbed to 4 per cent. Although vaccination is ongoing for all ages above 18, the coverage is still low. Only 4 million people have been fully vaccinated so far.

  • On 30 June, UNHCR Iran in coordination with BAFIA held a virtual event to commemorate World Refugee Day 2021. Despite some coordination challenges with our counterparts, the event was well attended by some 130 participants including UN and I/NGO partners, diplomatic missions, governmental partners (e.g. MOH and MOE) and a number of refugees. In their remarks, representatives from UNHCR, BAFIA, government miniseries and INGO/NGOs reiterated their support for refugees in Iran, while acknowledging the ongoing and upcoming challenges both in Iran and Afghanistan.

  • On 22/06, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced that the IMF had secured sufficient financing pledges to allow the Fund to provide comprehensive debt relief for the country. 101 IMF countries have pledged to provide more than SDR 992 million ($1 415,7 million) in financing to clear Sudan’s arrears to the institution, allow for the provision of new financing and facilitate the delivery of the HIPC Initiative. This will also unlock development assistance critical to promote investment to boost economic growth and reduce poverty, and create the conditions for higher and more inclusive growth in Sudan.
