President's Annual Greeting Ceremony with Diplomats: Zambia’s President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, today held the Annual Greeting Ceremony with diplomats accredited to Zambia at State House in Lusaka. The UNHCR Representative, Ms Pierrine aylara, was in attendance. The President mentioned a number of things/initiatives embarked upon by his Government last year, and outlined some of his Government’s vision for 2018, with regard to enhancing economic and foreign relations. During his presentation, the President committed a good portion of it talking about refugees and the need for the international community to support the refugee cause, especially the Congolese emergency.

UNHCR and partners have constructed almost 60 latrines, 70 bathing cubicles and 6 tube wells in Kutupalong and Nyapara. There are now over 4,600 latrines, some 1,920 bathing cubicles and 910 tube wells installed in the settlements.

By end of Dec, essential WASH services were provided to approx 120,397 people, including 68,152 children, living in Zaatari, Azraq and King Abdullah park camps.

By end 2017, the sector reached 118,107 males; (56,784 Male/ 61, 323Female) in both camps and host communities.

The UNHCR Site Planning (SP) unit is supporting the Field safety unit in upgrading the access control areas for Base camp and Registration. The upgrades will include installing new access caravans, fencing controlled access gap areas in the base camp, in addition to other minor construction works. The implementation is expected to start on the early days of January 2018.

The second campaign of LSS (August to October) reached 126,707 children (including 16,876 out-of-school children).

Over 3,000 refugees have arrived in January so far, with the majority arriving in South Darfur and East Darfur.

Progress made on individual (biometric) registration completed in North Darfur, and key settlements in East Darfur and South Kordofan.
