Considering the evolving situation in Venezuela, it is projected that people will continue to leave the country and UNHCR is stepping up the response accordingly
Authorities reported some 47,000 Venezuelans crossed into Ecuador in the month of December 2017, 86% of whom crossed via the Rumichaca International Bridge from Colombia. However not all of these people are expected to stay in Ecuador, as many continue to travel southwards overland towards Peru.
In Brazil, 527 Venezuelan nationals have been relocated from border regions to Brazilian cities in the country (Cuiabá, Manaus and São Paulo) to ease pressure on border communities and support Venezuelans to begin new lives.
In Peru during the first three weeks of January 2018 some 1,000 asylum claims were lodged by Venezuelans before the Special Commission for Refugees Secretariat in Lima.
