Following recommendations from the Jordan Strategic Humanitarian Committee JoSH meeting dated November 15, where the reform process of the Inter-Sector Working Group has been endorsed; the Inter-Sector Working Group (ISWG) was tasked to come up with final renewed architecture and recommendations to be revised and endorsed by JoSH. The government decision to extend Syrian exemptions from WP payments until 31/12/2023 is out, this includes payments for previous years, payments related to work permits, the health test, and penalties for not renewing work permits on time. (Jan 2023)

The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation confirmed that the Jordanian response plan for the Syrian crisis will be extended for the year 2023. (March 2023)

MOPIC will prioritize meeting basic needs and implementing impactful interventions for Syrian refugees and host communities based on national priorities, UNHCR's vulnerability assessment, and a census conducted with the Department of Statistics. ( March 2023)

Following the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, many refugees in Jordan have expressed hope, and caution, about the prospect of returning to Syria. While UNHCR is not promoting large-scale returns to Syria, UNHCR stands ready to support Syrian refugees who, being fully informed of the situation in their places of origin or an alternative area of their choice, choose voluntarily to return. In response to requests from refugees, UNHCR provides financial and transportation assistance to voluntary returns to ensure they are dignified and sustainable. (March 2026)

The 2026 interagency coordination framework, led by UNHCR, will focus on ensuring refugees can enjoy their human rights while advancing durable solutions, particularly for refugees who choose to return to their countries of origin.

The framework will enhance coherence between humanitarian assistance and national systems, with a focus on rights protection, social protection, civil documentation, access to justice, legal aid, child protection, and gender equality.

In the context of ongoing funding challenges, coordination will prioritize life-saving assistance, protection of rights, safeguarding documentation systems, and continuity of essential services, especially in refugee camps.

In partnership with the Government of Jordan, a new multi-year strategic framework will be developed to guide the comprehensive refugee response.
