The Route-Based Approach is a strategic, cross-border response framework developed by UNHCR and IOM to better understand and respond to the mixed movements of refugees and migrants. It focuses on displacement trends and protection risks along key routes, from countries of origin through transit and asylum countries, to destination countries. Its goal is to provide protection from the outset and stabilize and support populations in fragile and transit contexts, helping prevent dangerous journeys and reduce reliance on irregular movement.
