Honduras is characterized by a complex context of violence that disproportionately affects women, children, adolescents, and youth, who often find themselves forced to flee their homes in search of protection and humanitarian assistance.

Honduras set an example in preventing and responding to internal displacement with the ground-breaking Law for the Prevention, Care, and Protection of Internally Displaced Persons, which came into effect in April 2023.

UNHCR offers technical support for implementing the law and pursues preventive, protective, humanitarian, and solutions-based actions for forced displacement. UNHCR also supports the strengthening of the national asylum system, protection responses for Honduran returnees with protection needs, and promotes access to basic services and local integration opportunities for refugees and asylum-seekers. The country experiences mixed movements in the broader regional context, including returnees, some of whom require international protection.
