The East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region is host to some 4.96 million refugees and asylum seekers, the majority (2.16 million) from South Sudan. A further 10.07 million people are internally displaced in the region as a result of conflict and 4.20 million due to natural disasters. A total of 304,019 refugees have returned to their countries of origin in 2023.
