Libya continues to be the main departure and transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. As of 28 February 2017, the Libyan Coast Guard rescued/intercepted a total of 1,873 people in different locations along the Libyan coast, in Az Zawiyah, Zuwarah, Tripoli and Al Khums. Since 1 January 2017, Libyan local authorities have recovered 117 bodies of people who drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe. UNHCR is present in five health posts at disembarkation points, at Az Zawiyah, Tripoli (2), Tajurah (Al Hamidiyah) and Al Khums, where it provides medical and hygiene assistance.
