Four Female Suicide Bombers Attack Checkpoint in Maiduguri

Four female suicide bombers on Wednesday attacked a checkpoint in Mafa, about 25kilometres outskirts of Maiduguri.

The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, who confirmed the attack in a statement, said the suicide bombers were however stopped with the cooperation of the Borno Youths Empowerment, otherwise known as Civilian JTF at about 7.30a.m.

Usman said preliminary investigation revealed that suicide bombers were earlier observed trying to bypass a military checkpoint through a close by village before they were ordered to take the right road.
However, he said, few metres short of the checkpoint, one of the bombers swiftly detonated her vest.

“The vigilant troops gunned down the other three suicide bombers before they carry out their nefarious acts,” he said.

Sadly, he added that one of the Civilian JTF lost his life and four other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

Usman said the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordinance Device team in the area safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) carried by the other suicide bombers.

He however assured that the security situation in the area was now cool and calm.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) in the North-east, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, who spoke with THISDAY on phone, said the attack was targeted at youth vigilance group at a checkpoint.

He said when emergency workers got to the security checkpoint mangled bodies of the suicide bombers and the sole dead body of the member of youth vigilance group were picked.

Ibrahim said: “There was suicide bombing attacks at Mafa check point in the early hours of today 16 December, 2015 by four female suicide bombers.

“They targeted the civilian JTF stationed at the check point. Five of the civilian JTF were injured, one died and the four suicide bombers were all dead.”

He added that all the five injured members of the youth vigilance group were taken to the Borno State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri and are presently receiving treatment.”

In a related development, the troops of the 156 Battalion under 29 Brigade lost two soldiers with one officer injured during a hit-and-run attack by the Boko Haram terrorists.

The ambush, according to a military source, took place on Tuesday at Mada village, close to Allahgarno camp in Borno State.
