Bird flu: 35 farms depopulated, 1030 birds killed in Kano

Over 1030 birds from 35 farms affected by the recent outbreak of the avian influenza in Kano state have been killed as a measure taken to curtail the spread of the disease in the state and beyond.
This was disclosed by Kano State Director of Veterinary Services at the state Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Shehu Bawa.
He said 35 farms were affected and also the state government has succeeded in depopulating the affected farms, saying over 1030 birds were killed so far.
Similarly, Kano State government had recently revealed that it has released N3 million for the procurement of disinfectant to clean poultry farms affected by the recent outbreak of the influenza in the state.
Disclosing this in an interview with newsmen on the outbreak, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, said the measure had become necessary so as to check the spread of the disease to other farms across the state and beyond.
“As soon as the disinfectant is procured, it will be used to clean all the poultry farms found to be affected by the disease. Government is also doing its best to protect all the farms that are not yet affected by the disease and ensure that the disease does not spread to other places,” he said.
He also disclosed that a team of veterinary doctors and other experts had visited the affected farms with a view to assessing the situation, adding that the team is expected to forward their report to the state government for immediate action.
