The United Nations Refugee agency UNHCR says it is looking to render more support to Nigeria.

The agency’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, Mr Volker Turk disclosed this to journalists after a meeting with Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

He said the agency was concerned about the condition of people in the North-East region of Nigeria, which has been ravaged by insurgency.

“I was very honoured and pleased to meet with the Vice President and we had a discussion about the very complex situation in the North-East and how UNHCR and the other organizations of the United Nations can continue to provide support to the people directly affected by the insurgency,” he said.Osinbajo-Volker-UNHCR2

Mr Turk said they also looked at ways in which the agency can further work together with the Nigerian government on how to ameliorate the situation and the Vice President gave them the needed assurance on that.

“The Vice President is fully aware of the situation and also of our offer of support and we look very much forward to collaborating together,” Mr Turk stressed.
