The government's Union Peace Working Committee and the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) will meet in the northern town of Myitkyina on May 13.

"It will either be a one-day or two-day meeting. Both sides have agreed to meet," said Aung Naing Oo from Myanmar Peace Center.

"The reason is to review the whole process. I don't know who will be attending from the KIO side. The meeting will probably be held at Majwe Hall. But we need to negotiate this with the government," said KIO spokesperson Daungkhar.

Despite both sides agreeing to cease hostilities during previous peace talks, many skirmishes have taken place in Kachin State displacing more communities and threatening to scuttle the entire peace process.

The KIO's deputy chief of staff Major General Gwan Maw attended a meeting of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and proposed to meet the government on April 29.

During the meeting in Chiang Mai, the government and NCCT also agreed to meet on May 19 and 20 in Yangon to discuss the drafting of the ceasefire agreement.
