“More trust could be built between the two sides by a series of meetings seeking compromise on a single text document for the nationwide ceasefire agreement,” said U Hla Maung Shwe of Myanmar Peace Centre on Wednesday.

Giving an interview to media after a first-day single text meeting between Union Peace-Making Work Committee and National Ceasefire Coordination Team-NCCT, he expressed his willingness for politicaldialogue before the end of this year. Under a proposal to conclude drafting the single text document this July, both sides paid more attention on completion of the document but points temporarily agreed at Wednesday’s meeting have to be submitted to the leaders of both sides, he added.

Lt-Gen Thet Naing Win, Lt-Gen Ye Aung, Lt-Gen Thein Htay and Maj-Gen Maung Maung Ohn were among the attendees from UPWC led by Union Minister U Aung Min. An eight-member team of NCCT formed with 16 ethnic armed groups was led by Pado Saw Kwe Htoo Win, general secretary of KNU. Pado Saw Kwe Htoo Win asserted in his briefing to media at Myanmar Peace Centre that hosted

UPWC-NCCT’s single text meeting that both sides reached agreements over a use of terminology that made disputes between the two sides before and most of the points facing both sides difficult to accept.

Col Khun Okkar, chairman of Pa-O National Liberation Organization, who is also a member of NCCT said Wednesday’s meeting focused on more detail about vocabularies stated in the points agreed last April meeting. The discussion has reached Chapter 3 of the document in which there are seven chapters and it is expected to conclude discussions on the remaining chapters at the following meeting, he voiced.

Dr Salai Hlyan Hmon Sar Khaung, another member of NCCT and also the head of Chin National Front, defined Wednesday’s meeting as a more constructive discussion seeing progress in building mutual understanding.

Discussions on the detailed principles covered the government-proposed “Three Main National Causes” and a genuine federal union based on democracy, equality and self-determination that ethnic armed groups called for.

UPWC and NCCT launched the two-day talks to discuss a first draft single text document for a nationwide ceasefire at Myanmar Peace Centre on 5 April.

Should no consensus be reached at the end of the two-day meeting on Thursday, the talks will be extended until Friday, officials said.
