The State Communication Manager U Thet Maw shared with Kantarawaddy times that GSM Phone will be available for use this coming September around the whole of Kayah State.

Speaking on behalf of the government, U Thet Maw said that new telecommunication mobile towers will be built in July.

“Our tentative plan is to be ready in August. If we can finish installing communication devices by the end of July, it should be ready in August. If we can’t finish, it should be done within the month of September.”

Seven locations have been identified, namely Ka-la-ya (54) Military Base in Loikaw, Nwar la Woe Kayan Taryar Village, Dee Maw Soo, Pharu Soo, Baw
La Ke, Phar Saung and Mae Sae. Shar Taw Township has not been included yet in the development project.

Among those seven locations, only the tower to be built in Ka-La-Ya (54) Military Base (Loikaw) will be equipped with both WCDMA and GSM communication devices. The other six towers will only function with GSM phone which are produced by Myanmar Communication Company.

U Hein Min Lat, a resident from the town of Dee Maw Soo said that “The important thing is that good communication lines and services are available for customers. Whether they install G-tower (GSM) or C-tower (WCDMA) does not matter as there is good service.”

Indeed, last time Myanmar Telecommunication distributed CDMA-800MHZ mobile phones, the line was shut down due to device malfunction and, until now, people still have to use auto-exchange phone at phone station.

A resident from Baw La Ke Township pointed that “now, if they build new mobile tower for GSM mobile, they should also provide some services for former CDMA phone users.”

“We are happy about that but we are former CDMA-800 users. So how will we use it now if only GSM service become available? We, CDMA users and those who cannot afford to buy GSM phone will have difficulties.”

A of today, GSM mobile phone are only available in Loikaw (Kayah), CDMA in Dee Maw Soo Township and only auto-exchange phone is available in the rest of townships which makes communication really hard in those townships.

“Some of the new towers are almost finished and we only need to install the communication devices on them. After we finish installing these, the towers will be operational and telecommunications will be smoother than before in some difficult regions,” said U Maw Thet, State Communication Manager.
