General Saw Mutu Say Poe, the chairman of Karen National Union (KNU), called for the leaders of ethnic armed organisations to pay careful attention to a time limitation on political reforms taking place in the country at a time when we start a peaceful political process with the new quasi-government to be able to end a civil war lasting for 60 years.

General Mutu Say Poe, the alternate chairman of the summit, made an opening speech at the summit of the sixteen NCCT-member ethnic leaders for the second day held in Laiza , Kachin State on July 26. At the summit, the ethnic leaders held discussions about the nationwide ceasefire draft chapter by chapter.

“Solving political problems by means of political technique is a political fight. But, it must be based on negotiation. A process of negotiation should not be based only on motivation. We need to steer clear of dogmatic approaches and ideologies,” General Mutu Say Poe said.

“Time has limited us to political reform process and this is the point. The ceasefire and constitutional amendment are moving depending on time,” General Mutu Say Poe said.

General Mutu Say Poe quoted the phrase of former Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela’s saying if you want to make peace with enemy, you must work together. Only then, will your enemy be a partner.

“All ethnic armed organisations constantly insisted that political issue must be addressed by means of political way throughout Myanmar history. For the sake of this point, I urge all the ethnic leaders to start the political journey with the enemy to end the prolonged armed conflict lasting for over 60 years,” General Mutu Say Poe said.

“Political time and tide wait for no men and so we all need to note that. We are required to actively participate in building a new nation that we value diversity and new culture,” General Mutu Say Poe said.

“The current peace process is not the same as the ceasefire process existed in Myanmar history. Every ethnic armed organization needs to maintain the current situation and to bravely perform the duties in order to witness better situations,” General Mutu Say Poe said.

The KNU led by General Mutu Say Poe met with President Thein Sein five times and Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing six times and discussed internal peace matters.
