The final report on Myanmar’s landmark national census will be released in the last week of May, the Ministry of Immigration and Population has announced.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and dozens of civic organizations have set up public information programs to help explain the results. The programs, which began in March, describe how the census was conducted and give more details on parts of the results that may be confusing.

Myint Kyaing, director of the Ministry of Immigration and Population, said a total of 27 non-government organizations are involved nationwide alongside the UNFPA. “The ministry gives out books and CDs about the census during the events,” he added.

“A detailed report will be released in the last week of May,” said a manager for one of the domestic civic organizations. “Before the official release, the public should be informed how they took the census and why it happened.” He added that the UNFPA trained civic organizations because the public are lilely to find some aspects of the report “confusing”.

Last April Myanmar held its first national census for thirty years. The tally revealed that the country’s population is 51.4 million people, almost nine million less than the estimate of 60 million used by many organizations. The announcement by the Central Census Commission on August 30 drew criticism from some who said the figures required more explanation.
