The New Mon State Party is ready to sign the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) within two months, a party official said, but is uncertain whether it will it sign it on its own or as part of the United Nationalities Federal Council.

“We held discussions with the UNFC members and we need to discuss more to reach an agreement within two months,” U Naing Aung Ma Ngae told The Myanmar Times.

He was commenting following the central committee meeting held at the party’s headquarters from December 26 to 27, which decided to push for the signing of the NCA.

Asked what the party’s next move will be if UNFC members reject the proposal to sign the NCA, U Naing Aung Ma Ngae would not comment.

Naing Aung Ma Ngae, a committee member of the party and also vice president of the Delegation for Political Negotiation (DPN), said the party was close to signing the peace pact and participating in the peace effort but is still waiting for trust building with authorities and other organisations, according to the party’s Facebook page.

The party, a member of the UNFC (United Nationalities Federal Council), decided to sign the NCA as it was the only way to exit from the civil war, he added.

The party said it is committed to sign the NCA if the Peace Commission’s eight conditions are fulfilled.

The Karenni National Progressive Party, New Mon State Party, the Arakan National Council, Lahu Democratic Union and Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army-North are members of the UNFC. But all these parties are yet to sign the NCA.
