Four Kayin-based political parties have merged to establish the Karen National Democratic Party (KNDP), which has registered with the Union Election Commission (UEC), officials of the parties have told The Myanmar Times.

“The UEC has approved (the merger). We have chosen a party logo, but we have more things to do. An official letter is still to be released,” said Mann Aung Pyi Soe, vice chairman of the Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party (PSDP), one of the parties in the merger.

Aside from the PDSP, the other three political parties that formed the KNDP were the Karen Democratic Party (KDP), the Karen State Democracy and Development Party and the Karen National Democratic Party.

Two other Kayin-based political parties did not join the merger, namely the Karen People Party in Yangon and Karen National Party in Ayeyarwady.

“The registration has been completed,” Mann Aung Pyi Soe said. “We are waiting for the official letter from UEC. When we get it, we will draft party set-up and start canvassing for coming election,” said Saw Ye Win Naing, chair of KDP.

Five leaders each from the four parties were selected and they are now drafting principles and regulations of the new party as well as an election manifesto, he said.
