The budget for school infrastructure projects has been cut so that teachers can have the pay increase that President U Win Myint promised shortly after he was sworn into office in March, Education Deputy Minister U Win Maw Tun said.

“The cut was made according to the law. It is not because we don’t have enough money or we are broke. The tenders are not suspended,” he said at a ceremony marking the end of Telenor Myanmar’s summer technology and internet courses in Nay Pyi Taw at the weekend.

He said there was no additional allocation in the ministry’s six-month budget to fund the pay rise, so project expenditures had to be reduced.

However, the reduced amount will be restored in the 2018-2019 budget starting in September, he said.
