The Karen National Democratic Party (KNDP) will focus on reconciling armed ethnic groups in Kayin State and aiding the peace process, the group said in announcing their plans for the 2020 elections.
The KNDP Central Commission defined objectives for the party in the 2020 election campaign during a meeting late last month, said Mann Aung Pyi Soe, party chair.
“We urge reconciliation among Karen armed groups, success in the peace process, and understanding between the government, military and armed ethnic groups,” he said.
The KNDP said it will work to achieve these goals before 2020.
The meeting, which was attended by 50 committee members, also discussed the constitution of the KNDP.
“We made our party stronger as well as set the party’s budget and election campaign plan,” Mann Aung Pyi Soe added.
The KNDP has opened 20 party offices in Kayin’s townships, except for Thandaunggyi and Hpapun, since the October 26 meeting.
Other offices will be opened soon in the state, said Mann Aung Tin Win, party spokesman.
“We’ve started our campaign by opening offices,” he said.
The KNDP – which is a merger of the Karen Democratic Party, the Karen State Democracy and Development Party, the Karen National Democratic Party, and Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party – was registered in February.
