Democratic Republic of Congo. High Commissioner visits CAR refugees

By Hélène Caux, 21 Apr 2021

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi meets with refugees from the Central Africa Republic in Modale site, in the North Ubangi Province, DRC. He is seen here giving a registration refugee card to a young refugee who was just relocated from the boder area in Yakoma to the new Modale site. UNHCR has just started to move the refugees from Yakoma to this safer site located further inland. Meeting with refugees in the remote area of the country marked by the Ubangi river, Grandi heard accounts of brutal violence, and personal loss. The HC called for stepped up international support and solidarity with the Democratic Republic of Congo – a country struggling with one of the largest internally displaced populations in Africa and a generous host to half a million refugees fleeing conflict elsewhere in the region. The humanitarian response in the DRC has been impacted by severe underfunding. UNHCR’s 2021 appeal of US$204.8 million is just 16 per cent funded.
