At DRIF 2025, UNHCR and partners hosted a session to explore what it means to tackle hate before it spreads. Instead of reacting after harm is done, pre-bunking equips people with the knowledge to identify false narratives early — before they take root.
From community-level insights to innovative tools like an analog board game, our panelists shared what it takes to build safer digital spaces:
? Xenophobia doesn’t start online — but it spreads there fast.
? Refugees often don’t have a voice in public conversations that impact them.
? Young people need tools to think critically and act with empathy.
Refugee participants from the Democratic Republic of the Congo spoke up. They shared their own experiences with online discrimination, misinformation, and the power of being seen and heard.
This wasn’t just a conversation about hate. It was about agency, inclusion, and the kind of digital space we want to build — one rooted in empathy.
