World Refugee Day Marked In Yambio

YAMBIO, June 23, 2015 [Gurtong] – Thousands of people around have sought refuge within the republic of South Sudan due to war and atrocities in the home country.

According to the United Nation High Commissions for Refugees in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state, a total of 10,338 from different neighboring countries including Sudan are living in camps in the state.

The theme for this year 2015 is “refugees are ordinary people living in an extraordinary circumstance.”

While addressing the refugees on Saturday at Makpandu refugee camp in Yambio County, the state Assistant Commissioner for Refugee Affairs hon. Paulino Azizi said the government has continued to support the refugees’ affairs as one of its priority since the establishment in 2013 down to the Counties.

He said they have opened camps in two counties that is Napera in Ezo County and Makpandu in Yambio County simply to address and formalize with the refuge issues in the state.

The CRA Commissioner further said there is an increase of refugees from Congo who are undergoing registration.

Hon Paulino hailed the support given to the refugees by UNHCR but urged them to still come in to provided more like shelter, water, sanitation and protection to mention a few.

He also noted that despite the challenges of the ongoing crisis they have remained committed to protecting refugees and providing food and other essential services looking at the cost of living in the country.

The commissioner appealed to the international donor community in spite the international body sharing responsibility towards refugees’ protection and assistance.

He also said the commission in collaboration with the state government has demarcated agriculture land to the refugees in all the settlement counties of Yambio and Ezo to enable them work and reduce on the pressure of food insecurity.

“We have relocated 102 Sudanese refugees from western Sudan to Makpandu refugee settlement,” said Paulino.

He gave his thanks to the host communities where the refugees have sought their safety for being very cooperative to the foreigners who have joined from other countries.
