Students at Nuba refugee camp learn computer skills

Lutheran World Federation and the UN Refugee Agency have organized computer trainings for students Ajuong Thok camp for refugees from the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. Both refugees and members of the South Sudanese host community attend the trainings.
The UN Refugee Agency reported in a recent operational update that the church aid group held a graduaion ceremony on 25 September at Soba Secondary school to graduate 49 students from a first training course that last 3 months. They are currently training another group of 74 students.
Ajuong Thok now has an ICT centre with 37 computers.
“Congratulations to the 49 students who have graduated from the first 3-month ICT course in Unity State’s Ajuong Thok refugee camp. Among them were many secondary school students, teachers as well as members from the host community,” UNHCR announced Friday also on its Facebook page.
Students attended either morning or afternoon tuition sessions in basic computer skills.
28-year-old Arende said, “I’m a chemistry teacher at Soba secondary school. The course has helped me to access some teaching materials, like the periodic table, and some practical exercises.”
“This was my first time to use a keyboard but after a while I got used to it. I learned how to use Facebook and email. Most of the youth are keen to learn. It would be good if there were more places on the course.”
