  • During the reporting period, UNHCR implementing partner, Caritas, carried out a distribution in Mafraq in the north of Jordan. The distribution package included blankets, mattresses, school kits, hygiene kits and sanitation kits along with other much needed household items. The number of beneficiaries for this distribution was 45 families, and was part of a three day process reaching out to families, single males, and single females with targeted assistance.

  • UNHCR Jordan is continuing in its efforts to lower the barriers to registration in response to concerns that vulnerable Syrians were unable to cover the cost of travelling to Amman. This weekend, UNHCR organised transportation for a number of Syrians residing in Al Mafraq, in the north of Jordan, to BO Amman. In total, 39 cases, representing 110 individuals were registered with the Agency.

  • The number of those at Ramtha Transit facility is approximately 400.The increase in numbers can be attributable to a number of factors including a rise in the numbers of those crossing the border into Jordan illegally (that is those who have exited illegally) due to reported increase in violent unrest in Dara\'a, on the Syrian side of the border. Nonetheless, the number has remained stable.

  • The Government of Japan has confirmed in writing a contribution of USD 1,000,000 to UNHCR for \"Emergency Grant Aid to refugees and IDPs affected by the political instability in the Syrian Arab Republic\". The grant is for a three month period and UNHCR Jordan can expect to receive an earmarked $139,384 for Non-food Item assistance, and $110,616.00 for shelter assistance.

  • Jordan welcomed the visit of UN Under Secretary General Valerie Amos, who is on a regional tour regarding the Syrian situation. The UNSG met with the Government of Jordan, along with UN agencies who are responding to the current unrest and discussed coordination mechanisms. The UNSG described the current situation as a \"political crisis, with humanitarian implications.

  • Jordan attended the international \"Friends of Syria\" conference in Tunisia on the unrest in Syria. Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh insisted that the Kingdom does not support foreign military intervention and explained to Jordanian Senators that “Jordan does not interfere in any country’s affairs. It supports Arab consensus on Syria and rejects military intervention in the country.\\\" However the Foreign Minister also stressed that while the Jordanian Ambassador to Syrian remains in Damascus, does not imply that the Kingdom is satisfied with developments on the ground, and rejects the use of violence.
